The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

Constant phlegm or a feeling of mucus stuck in the throat can have several causes. The best treatment depends on what’s causing it.

Common Causes

1. Postnasal Drip

One of the most common causes. Excess mucus from the nose or sinuses drains down the back of the throat.

Possible triggers:

  • Allergic Rhinitis
  • Chronic Sinusitis
  • Colds and other upper respiratory infections

2. Acid Reflux

Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease or “silent reflux” can irritate the throat and create a sensation of mucus, throat clearing, or a lump in the throat.

3. Allergies

Environmental allergens such as pollen, dust mites, pet dander, and mold can increase mucus production.

4. Respiratory Conditions

Conditions such as:

  • Asthma
  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
  • Bronchiectasis

can lead to chronic mucus production.

5. Smoking and Irritants

Tobacco smoke, air pollution, chemical fumes, and vaping can irritate the airways and increase mucus production.

6. Dehydration

When you’re not drinking enough fluids, mucus can become thicker and more noticeable.

Ways to Reduce Mucus

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Use a humidifier if the air is dry.
  • Avoid smoking and secondhand smoke.
  • Identify and manage allergies.
  • Rinse the nose with saline if postnasal drip is suspected.
  • Limit foods that worsen reflux if you have symptoms of heartburn or reflux.
  • Avoid excessive throat clearing, which can further irritate the throat.

When to See a Doctor

Make an appointment if:

  • Symptoms persist for several weeks.
  • You have recurrent sinus infections.
  • You cough up blood.
  • You have unexplained weight loss.
  • You experience shortness of breath, wheezing, or chest pain.
  • You have difficulty swallowing.

Seek urgent medical care if

You have significant breathing difficulty, severe chest pain, or are coughing up a large amount of blood.

If you tell me:

  • How long you’ve had the mucus,
  • Whether it’s clear, white, yellow, green, or bloody,
  • Whether you also have a cough, nasal congestion, heartburn, or allergies,

I can help narrow down the most likely cause.
