These Visible Signs May Be Hiding Liver Disease
The liver performs hundreds of important jobs, including filtering substances from the blood, processing nutrients, producing bile, and helping regulate metabolism. Liver disease can sometimes develop quietly, but certain changes in the body may be warning signs.
Possible visible signs of liver problems
1. Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
A yellow tint to the skin or the whites of the eyes can happen when bilirubin builds up in the blood because the liver is not processing it properly.
2. Easy bruising or bleeding
A damaged liver may produce fewer proteins needed for normal blood clotting, which can make bruises appear more easily.
3. Swollen abdomen or legs
Fluid buildup can cause:
- A swollen belly (ascites)
- Swelling around the ankles and legs
4. Itchy skin
Some liver conditions can cause itching due to changes in bile flow and the buildup of substances in the bloodstream.
5. Spider-like blood vessels or red palms
Some people with chronic liver disease develop:
- Small, visible spider-shaped blood vessels on the skin
- Redness of the palms
6. Dark urine or pale stools
Changes in bile processing can affect urine and stool color.
7. Persistent fatigue and weakness
Ongoing tiredness can occur with liver disease, although it is also linked to many other conditions.
8. Loss of appetite or unexplained weight changes
Liver problems can affect digestion, metabolism, and appetite.
9. Confusion or changes in sleep patterns
In advanced liver disease, buildup of toxins can affect brain function, causing confusion, drowsiness, or personality changes.
Common causes of liver disease
- Fat accumulation in the liver (metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease)
- Alcohol-related liver damage
- Viral hepatitis
- Certain medications or toxins
- Genetic conditions affecting the liver
