Headlines like “THIS burns weeds in 1 day! They NEVER grow again!” are exaggerated. There is no homemade spray or common household product that reliably kills all weeds in one day and ensures they never return.
Here’s what actually works:
Contact weed killers
Products containing ingredients such as acetic acid (high-strength vinegar formulations) or certain commercial herbicides can burn the leaves quickly. However:
- They often do not kill the roots of perennial weeds.
- Many weeds regrow from underground roots or rhizomes.
Household vinegar (about 5% acetic acid) is generally only effective on young, small weeds and is less effective on established plants.
Boiling water
Pouring boiling water on weeds growing in cracks in sidewalks or driveways can kill the above-ground parts. It’s inexpensive but may need to be repeated and isn’t suitable near desirable plants.
Pulling weeds
For many garden weeds, removing the entire root system is the most reliable non-chemical method. This is easiest when the soil is moist.
Mulching
Applying a 5–10 cm (2–4 inch) layer of mulch helps prevent new weeds from germinating by blocking sunlight.
Why weeds come back
Many weeds return because they:
- Regrow from roots or underground stems.
- Produce seeds that remain viable in the soil for years.
- Spread from neighboring areas.
Be cautious with online “recipes”
Mixtures of vinegar, salt, and dish soap are often promoted online. While they may scorch leaves:
- Salt can persist in the soil, harming desirable plants and soil health.
- Dish soap is not designed as a herbicide and may damage nearby vegetation.
If your goal is to permanently clear an area, combining appropriate weed removal, mulching, and preventing new seeds from establishing is usually much more effective than relying on a single “miracle” spray.
