That headline is misleading. There is no simple household product that reliably burns weeds in one day and ensures they never grow back.
Here’s what actually works:
- Boiling water can quickly kill the above-ground parts of small weeds, especially those growing in cracks in pavement. However, weeds with deep roots often regrow.
- Vinegar (especially horticultural-strength vinegar) can burn the leaves of young weeds, but it usually does not kill the roots of established perennial weeds, so they may return.
- Salt can kill plants, but it also remains in the soil and can prevent desirable plants from growing. It may also contaminate surrounding soil and waterways, so it’s generally not recommended as a weed killer.
- Flame weeders can scorch weeds effectively in appropriate settings, but they require caution because of the fire risk.
To prevent weeds from coming back:
- Pull or dig out the roots of perennial weeds.
- Apply mulch around garden plants to block sunlight.
- Remove weeds before they set seed.
- For persistent infestations, use an appropriate herbicide according to the label if non-chemical methods are not sufficient.
So, while some methods can make weeds appear dead within a day, “they never grow again” is not a realistic claim for most weeds. Long-term control usually requires removing the roots or preventing new seeds from germinating.
