The claim “THIS burns weeds in 1 day! They NEVER grow again” is a common gardening clickbait claim and is usually exaggerated.
A weed can appear to die quickly when its leaves are burned or dried out, but permanent removal is much harder because many weeds survive through their roots, rhizomes, or seeds.
Common “quick kill” methods:
- Vinegar sprays: Can brown leaves within hours to a day, especially in sunlight, but often do not kill the roots of established weeds.
- Salt mixtures: May kill plants in the treated spot, but salt can remain in soil and prevent other plants from growing.
- Boiling water: Can kill small weeds and seedlings by heat damage, but regrowth is possible.
- Flame weeding: Burns the above-ground growth but may not eliminate deep roots.
For weeds that you truly want gone:
- Remove the roots when pulling.
- Use mulch to block sunlight and prevent new growth.
- Improve lawn or garden density so weeds have less space to establish.
- Choose a targeted weed-control method based on the location (lawn, flower bed, driveway cracks, etc.).
