A simple trick that many people find effective is to keep your trash bin as dry as possible, since maggots (fly larvae) need moisture and flies are attracted to damp, decomposing waste.
Here are a few low-effort methods:
- Freeze food scraps (especially meat, fish, and seafood trimmings) until trash collection day instead of putting them straight into the bin.
- Wrap smelly food waste in newspaper or a sealed bag before throwing it away.
- Sprinkle a little baking soda in the bottom of the bin to help absorb moisture and odors.
- Place a piece of cardboard, newspaper, or a paper towel at the bottom of the bin to soak up liquids.
- Keep the lid tightly closed so flies can’t lay eggs inside.
- Clean the bin regularly with hot, soapy water or a diluted disinfectant solution, especially during warm weather.
One particularly easy trick is to spray the inside of the bin and underside of the lid with a 1:1 mixture of white vinegar and water after cleaning. The vinegar helps reduce odors that attract flies, although it won’t kill maggots on its own.
If you already have maggots:
- Empty the bin.
- Pour boiling water over the maggots (taking care to avoid splashing).
- Wash the bin thoroughly with hot, soapy water.
- Let it dry completely before adding a new trash bag.
Preventing flies from laying eggs in the first place is the most effective way to avoid maggots. Keeping the bin dry, sealed, and clean usually makes a noticeable difference.
