Tiny white bumps keep showing up on my eyelids, and I can’t get in to be seen yet. What are these?

Tiny white bumps on the eyelids are most commonly benign (non-dangerous), but there are a few possible causes. The most likely ones include:

1. Milia (most common)

These are small, firm, white or yellowish bumps caused by trapped keratin under the skin.

  • Very common around eyelids and cheeks
  • Not painful or itchy
  • Not an infection
  • Don’t pop like pimples

They often appear without a clear reason, though heavy creams or skin irritation can contribute.

2. Closed comedones (clogged pores)

Similar to tiny whiteheads:

  • Slightly softer than milia
  • May be linked to skincare products or makeup
  • Can sometimes resolve on their own

3. Styes (less likely if they’re white and not painful)

A stye is an infection of an eyelash follicle:

  • Usually red, swollen, and tender
  • May form a small pus-filled bump
  • Typically painful (unlike what you described)

4. Xanthelasma (less common, especially if multiple or larger)

Soft, yellowish patches or bumps near eyelids:

  • Can be associated with cholesterol issues
  • Usually flatter than milia
  • More common in older adults

What you should not do

  • Don’t squeeze or pop them (especially near eyes)
  • Avoid harsh exfoliants or acids directly on eyelids
  • Don’t use acne treatments close to the eye area unless prescribed

Safe things you can try at home

  • Gentle cleansing once daily
  • Warm compress (5–10 minutes) to keep pores clear
  • Avoid heavy eye creams or oily makeup removers for now
  • Let them resolve naturally (milia often do)

When to get checked sooner

Seek medical care if you notice:

  • Pain, redness, or swelling
  • Rapid growth or spreading
  • Vision changes
  • Discharge from the eye
  • One bump becoming firm, irregular, or persistent for months

If you want, you can describe what they look like more (flat vs raised, hard vs soft, one eye or both), and I can help narrow it down further.
