Tiny white bumps on the eyelids are fairly common, and there are several possible causes. Without seeing them or examining the eyelid, it’s not possible to diagnose them for certain, but these are some of the most likely possibilities:
1. Milia (very common)
- Small, firm, white or pearl-like bumps under the skin.
- Usually painless and not inflamed.
- Caused by trapped keratin (a protein found in skin).
- They often occur around the eyes and should not be squeezed because the skin there is delicate and scarring or infection can occur.
2. Blocked oil glands (meibomian gland issues)
- The eyelids contain tiny oil glands that can become blocked.
- May cause small bumps, irritation, dryness, or a gritty feeling.
- Warm compresses can sometimes help.
3. Stye or chalazion (usually more swollen)
- A stye is often tender, red, and painful.
- A chalazion is usually a firmer, painless lump caused by a blocked gland.
- These are often larger than tiny white bumps.
4. Skin irritation or product buildup
New or heavy products can contribute, including:
- Eye creams
- Makeup
- Sunscreen
- Oily skincare products
What you can do while waiting to be seen
✅ Avoid squeezing or popping the bumps.
✅ Keep eyelids clean and remove makeup gently.
✅ Try a warm compress (clean warm washcloth) for 5–10 minutes if there is irritation or a blocked-gland feeling.
✅ Avoid sharing eye makeup or using expired products.
