High blood sugar (hyperglycemia) can range from mild early symptoms to serious, urgent warning signs.
Common warning signs
These often develop gradually:
- Increased thirst
- Frequent urination (especially at night)
- Dry mouth
- Fatigue or feeling unusually weak
- Blurred vision
- Headaches
- Increased hunger (sometimes)
- Slow-healing cuts or wounds
- Recurrent infections (skin, gum, urinary tract)
More concerning signs (higher sugar or longer duration)
These suggest worsening control, often seen in Diabetes mellitus:
- Unexplained weight loss
- Numbness or tingling in hands/feet
- Itchy skin or dry skin
- Persistent nausea
Emergency warning signs (seek urgent care)
These can signal dangerous severe Hyperglycemia or diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA):
- Vomiting or severe nausea
- Fruity or acetone-like breath odor
- Deep or rapid breathing
- Confusion, drowsiness, or difficulty staying awake
- Severe abdominal pain
- Very high blood sugar readings (if you check)
Important note
If symptoms are mild but persistent, it’s still worth checking blood sugar. If severe symptoms appear, especially confusion, vomiting, or rapid breathing, that’s an emergency.
If you want, tell me your symptoms or a glucose reading and I can help you interpret it.
