What does the color of your urine say about your health?

Urine color can provide clues about hydration and some health conditions, but it cannot diagnose a disease by itself. Many foods, vitamins, and medicines can also change urine color.

Here is what common colors may mean:

Urine color Possible meaning
Pale yellow / straw-colored Usually a sign of good hydration and normal urine concentration.
Dark yellow / amber Often means you may need more fluids, especially if you have been sweating or not drinking enough water.
Clear (almost colorless) May mean you are drinking more water than you need; very frequent clear urine can sometimes be linked to certain medical issues.
Bright yellow Often caused by B vitamins, especially vitamin B2 (riboflavin).
Pink or red Can come from foods like beets, but may also indicate blood in urine from causes such as urinary tract problems, kidney stones, or other conditions and should be checked if unexplained.
Orange May be caused by dehydration, certain medications, or liver/bile-related issues.
Brown or tea-colored Can occur with severe dehydration, some medications, muscle breakdown, or liver-related problems and should be evaluated if persistent.
Blue or green Rare; can be caused by certain dyes, medications, or infections.
Cloudy or milky May be due to dehydration, crystals, infection, or other urinary issues, especially if accompanied by pain or burning.
Foamy urine Occasional bubbles can be normal, but persistent excessive foam may be worth discussing with a clinician because it can sometimes indicate protein in urine.

Seek medical advice if you notice:

  • Blood or red urine without an obvious food/medication cause
  • Dark brown urine that persists
  • Cloudy urine with fever, pain, or burning
  • Strong new urinary odor with other symptoms
  • Significant changes in urination frequency, pain, or swelling

A simple rule: pale yellow is generally a good sign; consistently very dark, unusual, or changing urine deserves attention—especially with other symptoms.
