9 Early Signs of Vascular Dementia Most People Overlook

Vascular dementia is a type of cognitive decline caused by problems with blood flow to the brain, often related to strokes or damage to small blood vessels. Symptoms can appear gradually and may be mistaken for normal aging.

1. Slower thinking and processing speed

  • Taking longer to understand information, make decisions, or respond in conversations can be an early sign.

2. Trouble with planning and organizing

  • Difficulty managing finances, following routines, preparing meals, or completing tasks with multiple steps may appear.

3. Changes in walking and balance (often overlooked)

  • A slower walk, shorter steps, unsteadiness, or increased falls can sometimes appear early because vascular damage may affect brain areas involved in movement.

4. Problems with attention and focus

  • Someone may struggle to concentrate, become easily distracted, or have trouble following conversations.

5. Mood and personality changes

  • Increased irritability, apathy, anxiety, depression, or emotional changes may occur.

6. Memory problems

  • Memory loss can happen, but in vascular dementia it may initially be less prominent than problems with organization, attention, and thinking speed.

7. Difficulty finding words

  • Pausing frequently, losing track of words, or having trouble expressing thoughts can occur.

8. Confusion after small strokes or health events

  • Symptoms may worsen suddenly after a stroke or appear in a “step-like” pattern, with periods of stability followed by declines.

9. Trouble with everyday activities

  • Tasks that require judgment, coordination, or planning may become harder over time.

When to seek medical advice

A medical evaluation is important if there are new or worsening changes in memory, thinking, walking, personality, or daily functioning. Some causes of cognitive changes can be treatable, including medication effects, vitamin deficiencies, thyroid problems, sleep disorders, and depression.

Stroke warning signs require urgent action:

  • Face drooping
  • Arm weakness or numbness
  • Speech difficulty
  • Sudden vision changes, severe headache, or loss of balance

Managing blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, and physical activity can help protect brain blood vessels and reduce vascular risk.
