Ants can’t stand it! Use it to keep them away for good.

Ants Can’t Stand It? Ways to Help Keep Ants Away

Many home remedies claim to keep ants away permanently, but there is no single ingredient that guarantees ants will never return. The most effective approach is to remove what attracts them and block their entry points.

1. Clean Up Food Sources

Ants are attracted to food and water.

  • Wipe up crumbs and spills promptly.
  • Store food in airtight containers.
  • Empty rubbish bins regularly.
  • Clean pet food bowls after use.

2. Seal Entry Points

Inspect your home for small gaps around:

  • Windows
  • Doors
  • Pipes
  • Cracks in walls

Sealing these openings can make it harder for ants to get inside.

3. Use Natural Repellents

Some people find that strong scents may discourage ants in certain areas, including:

  • Peppermint oil
  • Lemon juice
  • Vinegar
  • Cinnamon

These may temporarily disrupt ants’ scent trails, but they usually do not eliminate an entire colony.

4. Remove Scent Trails

Once ants find food, they leave a chemical trail for others to follow.

Wipe surfaces with soapy water or a vinegar-and-water solution to help remove these trails.

5. Manage Outdoor Areas

Keep ants away from your home by:

  • Trimming plants that touch the house.
  • Removing piles of leaves or wood near the foundation.
  • Fixing leaks and reducing standing water.

When Ants Keep Coming Back

If you have a large or persistent infestation, you may need ant baits or professional pest control. Baits are often more effective than sprays because worker ants carry the bait back to the colony, helping reduce the nest over time.
