Your legs are screaming “HELP!”: 5 warning signs from your liver.

Leg symptoms can sometimes be linked to liver problems, because the liver plays an important role in regulating fluids, proteins, hormones, and toxins in the body. However, many leg symptoms are caused by much more common issues (such as circulation problems, muscle strain, medications, or nerve conditions), so they are not automatically a sign of liver disease.

Here are 5 leg-related warning signs that may occur with certain liver conditions:

  1. Swelling in the legs and ankles (edema)
    • Liver disease can contribute to fluid buildup, especially in the lower legs and feet.
    • This can happen when the liver makes less albumin, a protein that helps keep fluid inside blood vessels.
  2. Muscle loss or weakness
    • Advanced liver disease can be associated with loss of muscle mass and reduced strength, sometimes noticeable in the legs.
  3. Leg cramps
    • Some people with chronic liver conditions report muscle cramps, which may be related to changes in fluids, electrolytes, or circulation.
  4. Itching (pruritus), sometimes on the legs
    • Certain liver and bile duct problems can cause a buildup of bile-related substances that trigger widespread itching.
  5. Changes in skin color or appearance
    • Liver disease may cause signs such as yellowing of the skin (jaundice), easy bruising, or changes in blood vessels under the skin.

Other important liver warning signs include:

  • Persistent fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
  • Nausea
  • Dark urine
  • Pale stools
  • Yellow eyes or skin
  • Abdominal swelling or discomfort

If you have new leg swelling (especially one-sided), severe pain, shortness of breath, yellowing of the eyes/skin, confusion, or rapidly worsening symptoms, seek medical advice promptly.

Leg symptoms alone usually cannot diagnose liver disease; a healthcare professional may need blood tests and other evaluations to determine the cause.
