Aneurysm: Signs you shouldn’t ignore… See more

Signs of an aneurysm you should not ignore

1. Sudden, severe headache (“worst headache of your life”)

This can be a warning sign of a brain aneurysm rupture, which is a medical emergency.

2. Sudden vision problems

  • Blurred vision
  • Double vision
  • Loss of vision in one eye
May occur if a brain aneurysm presses on nearby nerves.

3. Pain above or behind the eye

Can indicate pressure on nerves in the brain.

4. Drooping eyelid or uneven pupils

A possible neurological sign of a growing brain aneurysm.

Signs of a possible aortic aneurysm (main artery in chest/abdomen)

5. Sudden severe chest or back pain

  • Sharp, tearing, or ripping sensation
  • May spread to the back or abdomen

6. Pulsating feeling in the abdomen

May be felt as a strong heartbeat in the stomach area.

7. Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing

Can occur if the aneurysm affects blood flow or presses on nearby structures.

If an aneurysm ruptures (emergency symptoms)

A rupture is life-threatening and may cause:

  • Sudden collapse or loss of consciousness
  • Severe headache (brain aneurysm)
  • Rapid drop in blood pressure
  • Shock symptoms (cold, clammy skin, confusion)

Important risk factors

You may be at higher risk if you have:

  • High blood pressure (Hypertension)
  • Smoking history
  • Family history of aneurysms
  • Certain genetic conditions (like connective tissue disorders)
  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of arteries)

When to seek immediate help

Go to emergency care immediately if you experience:

  • Sudden “explosive” headache
  • Severe chest, back, or abdominal pain
  • Fainting or collapse
  • Sudden neurological symptoms (vision loss, weakness, confusion)

Aneurysms can be silent until they become dangerous, so new, severe, or sudden symptoms should never be ignored.
