The claim that “every washing machine can dry laundry” is a bit misleading. Most washing machines cannot fully dry clothes like a tumble dryer, but many people overlook a function that can make laundry much less wet:
The hidden “drying” function: high-speed spin cycle
Almost every washing machine has a spin cycle. During spinning, the drum rotates very fast and uses centrifugal force to remove a large amount of water from clothes.
To get drier laundry:
- Put clothes in the washer.
- Select the highest spin speed your machine allows (for example, 1000–1600 RPM).
- Run an extra spin-only cycle after washing if clothes are still very wet.
- Shake clothes out before hanging them to help them dry faster.
However:
- A washing machine with a dryer function (washer-dryer combo) can actually dry clothes using heat.
- A normal washing machine with only a spin cycle does not dry clothes completely; it only removes excess water.
