How to Clean Black Mold from a Refrigerator Gasket in Minutes

Black mold on a refrigerator gasket (the rubber seal around the door) is common because moisture and food residue can collect there. You can often clean it, but take care to avoid spreading mold spores.

How to clean mold from a refrigerator gasket

What you need:

  • Warm water
  • Mild dish soap
  • Soft cloth or sponge
  • Old toothbrush or small brush
  • Gloves
  • Optional: white vinegar or a commercial mold-cleaning product suitable for appliances

Steps:

  1. Empty and inspect the area
    • Remove food near the gasket and check the seal for cracks or damage.
  2. Wash first
    • Mix warm water with a small amount of dish soap.
    • Wipe the gasket thoroughly to remove dirt and food residue.
  3. Scrub the folds
    • Use a toothbrush or small brush to reach inside the gasket grooves where mold collects.
  4. Treat remaining mold
    • For stubborn spots, you can use white vinegar on a cloth and let it sit briefly before wiping.
    • Avoid mixing vinegar with bleach or other cleaners, as dangerous fumes can form.
  5. Rinse and dry completely
    • Wipe away any cleaner residue with a clean damp cloth.
    • Dry the gasket well, since moisture encourages mold growth.
  6. Prevent it from returning
    • Wipe the gasket dry regularly.
    • Clean spills quickly.
    • Check that the refrigerator door closes tightly.

When to replace the gasket

If the seal is:

  • Cracked or torn
  • Permanently stained with mold
  • No longer sealing properly

…it may be better to replace it, because mold can grow inside damaged rubber.

If the mold keeps returning quickly or there is a strong musty smell inside the refrigerator, it may indicate a larger moisture or cleaning issue that needs attention.
