The five drinks that are most harmful to your bones, according to health experts.

Drinks that may be harmful to bone health when consumed frequently or in large amounts are generally those that can reduce calcium intake, affect calcium balance, or contribute to habits linked with lower bone density. Health experts often point to these five:

  1. Cola and other dark soft drinks
    • Colas often contain phosphoric acid, and heavy consumption has been associated in some studies with lower bone mineral density, especially when these drinks replace calcium-rich beverages like milk.
    • Many are also high in added sugar.
  2. Excessive alcohol
    • Heavy alcohol intake can interfere with the body’s ability to absorb and use calcium and vitamin D.
    • Long-term excessive drinking is linked with a higher risk of osteoporosis and fractures.
  3. Energy drinks
    • These may contain high levels of caffeine and added sugar.
    • Very high caffeine intake may slightly increase calcium loss through urine, particularly if calcium intake is low.
  4. Sugary soft drinks and sweetened beverages
    • Frequent intake can displace healthier drinks and foods that provide calcium, protein, and other bone-supporting nutrients.
    • High sugar intake may also contribute indirectly through metabolic effects.
  5. Excessive caffeinated drinks
    • Large amounts of coffee, strong tea, or caffeinated beverages may affect calcium balance in some people, especially those who do not get enough calcium from their diet.

Better choices for supporting bones:

  • Milk or calcium-fortified plant milks
  • Water
  • Yogurt-based drinks
  • Drinks with vitamin D and calcium (when appropriate)

Bone health also depends on calcium intake, vitamin D, protein, weight-bearing exercise, hormones, age, and overall diet—not just one type of drink.
