That claim isn’t really true.
A mix of Vaseline + coffee grounds will not reliably burn weeds, kill roots, or prevent regrowth.
Why it doesn’t work
- Coffee grounds are organic matter — they don’t contain strong herbicidal chemicals.
- Vaseline (Vaseline petroleum jelly) is an oil barrier — it can coat surfaces but doesn’t penetrate or destroy plant tissues effectively.
- Plants (especially weeds) regrow from roots, and this mixture does nothing to kill the root system.
At best, it might:
- stick to leaves and slightly block sunlight
- make a mess in the soil
But it will not “kill in 1 day” or stop regrowth permanently.
What actually works for weeds
If you want real results, these are the proven options:
- Manual removal (pulling roots out completely) — most effective long-term
- Boiling water — kills surface growth quickly (good for cracks/paths)
- Vinegar-based sprays (acetic acid) — can burn leaves but often regrows unless roots are damaged
- Mulching — blocks sunlight so weeds can’t sprout
Important warning
Some DIY mixes online (salt, strong acids, oils) can:
- damage soil fertility
- kill nearby plants
- pollute groundwater
If you want, tell me where the weeds are growing (garden, driveway, walls, etc.), and I can suggest the best safe method for that exact spot.
