Unpleasant habits in old age that make people uncomfortable, but nobody tells you… See more

That sounds like another “See more…” teaser. While the hidden text can vary, there are some habits that can unintentionally make social interactions more difficult in older age—and they aren’t unique to older adults.

Common examples include:

  • Poor personal hygiene or wearing unwashed clothes.
  • Speaking very loudly or interrupting conversations.
  • Repeating the same stories or asking the same questions frequently.
  • Giving unsolicited advice or criticizing others.
  • Complaining constantly or focusing only on negative topics.
  • Ignoring personal boundaries or others’ privacy.
  • Resisting any new ideas or refusing to adapt to changes.
  • Neglecting dental care, which can contribute to bad breath.
  • Smoking around others or wearing strong fragrances that bother people.
  • Not managing hearing loss, leading to communication difficulties.

It’s important to remember that some behaviors that people interpret as “bad habits” may actually be related to hearing loss, vision problems, medication side effects, depression, chronic illness, or cognitive conditions such as dementia. In those cases, understanding and appropriate medical care are more helpful than judgment.
