The Real Causes of Constant Phlegm and Mucus in Throat and How to Get Rid of It

Constant Phlegm and Mucus in the Throat: Causes and How to Reduce It

Having mucus in your throat from time to time is normal—your body makes mucus to trap dust, germs, and irritants. But constant throat clearing, a “lump” feeling, or ongoing phlegm may be linked to several common conditions.

Common causes of persistent throat mucus

1. Postnasal drip

One of the most common causes.

  • Mucus from the nose or sinuses drains down the back of the throat.
  • Often caused by allergies, colds, sinus irritation, or nasal congestion.

Signs:

  • Frequent throat clearing
  • Feeling mucus stuck in the throat
  • Worse when lying down

2. Acid reflux (GERD or silent reflux)

Stomach acid can irritate the throat and trigger extra mucus production.

Possible signs:

  • Hoarseness
  • Chronic cough
  • Throat clearing
  • A sour taste or burning sensation (though some people have “silent reflux” without heartburn)

3. Allergies

Allergic reactions can increase mucus production.

Common triggers:

  • Dust mites
  • Pollen
  • Pet dander
  • Mold

4. Smoking or exposure to irritants

Smoke, pollution, strong chemicals, and dry air can irritate airways and increase mucus.

5. Asthma or airway conditions

Some people with asthma or chronic airway irritation have:

  • Persistent cough
  • Chest tightness
  • Increased mucus

6. Dehydration

When you do not drink enough fluids, mucus can become thicker and harder to clear
