As people get older, skin changes naturally. It often becomes thinner, drier, and more sensitive, which means shower habits that worked in younger years may need adjustment. A daily shower is not automatically harmful for everyone over 65, but very frequent or harsh showering can sometimes contribute to skin problems.

How daily showers may affect older skin

1. Increased dryness

With age, the skin produces less natural oil. Frequent washing—especially with hot water and strong soaps—can remove protective oils and leave skin:

2. Weakened skin barrier

The skin barrier helps keep moisture in and protects against irritants. Over-washing may make it easier for the skin to become irritated.

Aging skin may react more easily to:
