These visible signs may be hiding liver disease

The liver can sometimes become damaged without obvious symptoms, especially in the early stages. When signs do appear, they may be subtle and easy to overlook.

Visible signs that may be linked with liver problems

  1. Yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • A yellow tint can occur when bilirubin builds up in the blood because the liver is not processing it properly.
  1. Changes in skin appearance
  • Some people with liver disease may develop:
    • Easy bruising
    • Itchy skin
    • Small spider-like blood vessels on the skin (“spider angiomas”)
    • Redness of the palms
  1. Swelling in the abdomen or legs
  • Fluid buildup can cause a swollen abdomen or swollen ankles and legs, especially in more advanced liver disease.
  1. Dark urine or pale stools
  • Changes in bile processing can affect urine and stool color.
  1. Persistent fatigue
  • Ongoing tiredness, weakness, or reduced stamina can occur with liver problems, though these symptoms have many other possible causes.
  1. Loss of appetite or unexplained weight changes
  • Digestive changes and altered metabolism can affect eating patterns and weight.
  1. Confusion or changes in thinking
  • In advanced liver disease, toxins that are normally filtered can affect brain function, causing confusion or sleep changes.

Common causes of liver disease include

  • Fat buildup in the liver (metabolic dysfunction–associated steatotic liver disease, formerly called fatty liver disease)
  • Excess alcohol use
  • Viral hepatitis
  • Certain medications or toxins
  • Genetic liver conditions

When to seek medical advice

Talk to a healthcare professional if you notice:

  • Yellow eyes or skin
  • Unexplained abdominal swelling
  • Vomiting blood or black stools
  • Severe confusion or extreme drowsiness
  • Persistent symptoms that concern you

Regular checkups, blood tests (such as liver enzymes), and appropriate imaging can help detect liver problems before they become severe.
