This is why we get cramps at night

Nighttime leg cramps are sudden, painful muscle contractions—most commonly in the calves, feet, or thighs—that occur during sleep or while resting.

Common causes include:

  • Muscle fatigue or overuse from exercise or prolonged standing.
  • Dehydration, especially in hot weather or after heavy sweating.
  • Sitting or sleeping in certain positions that shorten the calf muscles.
  • Mineral imbalances, such as low levels of magnesium, potassium, or calcium.
  • Pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters.
  • Certain medical conditions, including Type 2 Diabetes, kidney disease, nerve disorders, and circulation problems.
  • Some medications, such as certain diuretics (“water pills”), may contribute in some people.

To help prevent cramps:

  • Stay well hydrated.
  • Stretch your calves and legs before bed.
  • Maintain regular physical activity without overexertion.
  • Wear supportive footwear if you spend long periods standing.

If a cramp occurs, gently stretching and massaging the muscle or walking around can often help it relax.

If cramps are frequent, severe, associated with muscle weakness, swelling, or other symptoms, it’s worth discussing them with a healthcare professional to look for an underlying cause.
